Soulfly

„There’s definitely something powerful about the number three,” so Max Cavalera, seines Zeichens Frontmann und Mastermind, der sowohl mit seiner aktuellen Band Soulfly, als auch durch seine Vergangenheit als Kopf von Sepultura unauslöschliche Einträge ins große Buch der Metalgeschichte zu verzeichnen hat. Doch neben dem spirituellen Aspekt steht natürlich auch der hoffnungsvoll-pragmatische Ansatz: „When Metallica did Master of Puppets and Black Sabbath with Masters of Reality, those records were awesome. I hope Soulfly can do the same.”

Derart hehre Ziele wollen natürlich nicht nur ausgesprochen, sondern auch umgesetzt werden: Und so wird auf gewohnt hohem musikalischen Niveau denn auch der musikalische Bogen auf „3“ ungewöhnlich groß angelegt und doch in sich völlig stimmig geschlagen: neben den konsequent weiterentwickelten, bereits von den älteren Alben bekannten Tribal-Metal-Elementen, die sich gerade auf Songs wie „Seek´n´Strike“ in noch gereifterer Form präsentieren, finden sich jedoch auch nachdenklichere Klänge auf diesem Meilenstein-Album. Beim ersten Höreindruck erstaunlich, doch das Bedürfnis, sich nicht in all den Jahren schlichtweg wiederholen zu wollen, wie es usus bei manch anderen Bands der unterschiedlichsten Genres ist, wird deutlich: „It’s the album where we reach the level of maturity that we were looking for with the last two records. But we also wanted to continue surprising people with different elements. So on the one hand it’s the chemistry of Soulfly that we’ve found over the years of the band being together, but on the other hand we’ve also been developing experimental stuff so we don’t become repetitious and boring.”
